Deer Mineral Licks and Deer Mineral Stations

In most areas, whitetail deer can often obtain most of their dietary requirements with the exception of sodium (Na) in most habitats. Whitetail deer and other herbivores require sodium for regulation of fluid volume and blood pressure, maintenance of osmotic balances and buffer systems, and conduction of nerve impulses. Sodium is not readily available in the plant materials that they consume since most plants do not require sodium.
Therefore, deer actively seek sources of sodium. This salt drive is highest in deer during the spring and summer months. The amount of water and potassium in the diet impacts the ability of deer to retain sufficient sodium for metabolic needs.
During the spring, many plants deer consume contain exceptionally high levels of water and potassium, causing a temporary sodium imbalance that results in development of the salt drive and the amazing results and activity we see at our deer mineral stations throughout our food plots. Research has shown that antler mineralization in whitetail deer reaches its peak during the late summer when the sodium drive in bucks is strong.
Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that providing supplemental sodium during this time can be beneficial to deer. Deer in most areas seldom move more than about one mile for salt minerals. Thus, providing a supplemental source of sodium deer mineral stations, salt blocks likely will not alter deer distribution to a great extent; however, it may attract deer from the local area (about 2 to 3 miles) to a specific site.
Care should be taken if you deer hunt on the property and are considering any type of deer mineral management. Salt and mineral blocks are considered to be bait in some states, please check with your local Department of Natural Resources before beginning a mineral program.
One option for a deer mineral supplement is Nature's Own "The Enhancer". This strategic blend of minerals, vitamins and nutrients are designed to produce a healthier deer herd. "The Enhancer" is fed in a dry form so that the deer may readily extract it from the feeding site you have selected. The specially formulated, long-lasting flavor is the key element in "The Enhancer." This flavor will last in snow, rain, wind and high temperatures.
